They provided raw materials like dyes and fibers, and adornments for rituals and celebrations. Palace gardens advertised wealth and power. Temple gardens created spaces for contemplation. Herb gardens provided medicines, offered cures and ways to ward off evils spirits and even insects. Ruling classes strolled their labyrinthine gardens while humble peasants fenced in their small kitchen gardens. Every culture has a culture of gardening.
Thousands upon thousands of years later, gardens continue to provide us with food, beauty, and a myriad of products and benefits. We enjoy a rich inheritance from gardens and gardeners all over the world. We plant and hope and harvest like all the gardeners that came before us.
